TOO AWESOME……… shutup and watch……
Julian – Black Heart
I keep having people telling me that RnB is dead…..What??? really??? are you out of your mind???
This is Julian, another example of Canada running shit right now (lets not get started on naming artists) and another reason to yell RnB aint dead. We met Julian during our time in T.O. when he was the frontman for the 6 piece group, Capital Stacks, well it seems that part of his music life is over as a couple weeks ago he released his first solo project Black Heart.
Hitting that dark side of RnB that seems to be getting more and more popular every week, sexy, slow and layered with a beautiful pop sensibility which would be one of my favourite things about this tape, this is what pop music is meant to sound like!! Smoke, make love and vibe to this shit!
The album is up for free on the XO (as if you didn’t see that one…) affiliate’s website HearJulian. Props out to the homie Julian, download the album and keep an eye on this guy, the least he may do is get you laid.

Hiatus Kaiyote – Tawk Tomahawk
Just over a week ago Melbourne’s future soul juggernaut Hiatus Kaiyote dropped their debut EP “Tawk Tomahawk” and with the group only being around for a short time now they have not only released one of the best records to come out of melbourne since I can remember but also been able to reawaken my love for non electronic based Australian music.
It’s a sum of all it’s parts that make them and this release so damn good, Nai Palm’s vocals sparkle and shine over gorgeous synths, soulful bass, trickling samples, changing feels and mostly I’m a huge sucker for Perrin Moss’s drum work, dude gets a magical sound out of his kit and nails every track. Hip-hop beats, jazz styles, downbeat soul and future beat could you make me like this more? from the first time I saw them i was filled with a new sense of hope for Australian music, THIS WILL GET NOTICED!!!
These guys are just absurdly good musicians, I would highly recommend you hit one of their live gigs ASAP, first off because their live shows are fantastic and secondly as someone just recently put it to me “this time next year they’ll be playing sold out shows at the Forum and shit” and i totally agree.
You can (and should) grab the EP which was mostly recorded in their home in Northcote from their bandcamp
We’ve got Ocelot and Sphynx Gate locked in and on repeat!
Marsimoto – Grüner Samt/Der Film
Ok so really there isn’t much i know about Marsimoto….. due to the fact that i don’t actually speak German. I do know he’s all about the green and i don’t mean money. Green smoke, green mask, Green Berlin, Green Velvet, green boxing gown and mostly green…well you know.
Look when i first heard this a couple of months back i must say i did think it was a German DOOM/Quasimodo rip off but i think that just may have been the mask and the voice, for real this guy stands up on his own, most of his beats are ill and dude seriously gets what to do with his flow!!! ….just wish i knew what he was on about, other than buds….. i can make out that part.
Here we got a 35 min album sampler kind of video, it would have to be the only time i’ve watched a 35 min clip without understanding more than thirty seconds of it, I mean almost all of it’s in German… but i sat through the whole thing, it’s actually pretty ill. though his rapping at the camera is trying at times. Anyway watch it below, shot in Granada and Heidelberg as well as a few other spots and it’s been directed by Paul Ripke. I would suggest grabbing the album Grüner Samt (Green Velvet?) which is out on iTunes & Amazon (limited edition and vinyl) it’s that good good.

and this is without a doubt the track that got us into him. (it is in Der Film and is an awesome fucking clip but i guess some peeps dont have the 35 min required)

TNGHT (if you don’t know by now)
Ummmmm if you don’t know by now then i actually don’t know what a) rock you have been hiding under b) cave you’ve been living in. TNGHT is Luckyme fam’s Hudson Mohawke and Lunice. for ages now peeps have been dreaming of a collab project and it’s finally here, shit i don’t think there has been this much hype around a release in a long time. Ripped songs from live sets online or seeing one of the Luckyme crew live have been the only way to hear them so far (there are three tracks ripped online now) well here’s a bit more hype for them, not that they need it (everyone’s been talkin about how they killed SXSW), seriously these boys be coming out the fucking trap hard. This could actually be the biggest team up since…. damn i dunno The Avengers comics or Caesar & Cleopatra!!!
It’s all going to be dropping on WARPxLuckyme this winter (Summer for you Northerners).
I think this Scion A/V clip sums it up pretty well.
Hudson Mohawke & Lunice are… TNGHT (Scion AV) from Scion A/V on Vimeo.
plus here’s the rips if you havent heard them
If that didn’t get you dancing around the room i dunno where your fucking head at.
GET HYPE!!!
Ake Djassen
Dayum there’s just not to much to say about Ake…. other than it’s taken us way to long to write something about him.
We stumbled on him a year or so back when he put out a track called Cry Baby (which has mysteriously disappeared from the web and is without a doubt one of our most played tunes of the last year and a half or so), couldn’t find much info on the guy then and though he released a new tape back in January this year we still can’t seem to find much on him. can you say UNDERGROUND? but seriously it’s like the guy doesn’t want anyone to listen to his shit!
Well we’re going to ruin that if that was his intent. His last tape FORTUNE EP is up on his tumblr and is going for free!! this is some real nice stuff, chilled, a bit dancey, laid back and real fresh! we can’t really find anyone that’s getting this sound as good as him. Even with only the five or six tracks he has out he would be one of our favourite artists here in our galaxy.
Oh his clips are fucking fun as well. So here’s a homemade clip for one of the tunes off the Fortune EP, Peppermint Club, the bell melodies rock out…. just like the cowboy/girls. (I mean seriously….. not even 500 views??? why the hell is everyone sleeping on this shit!!!!)
and here’s that favorite of ours “Cry Baby”

Galapagoose Mix for Xfm
Just recently the wondrous queen Mary Anne Hobbs had the Melbourne beat scene stalwart, music g and all round great guy Galapagoose on her show for a guest mix. This follows up the double handed maestro’s recent release Commitments —cop now—- which dropped a couple of weeks ago (locally on Two Bright Lakes and internationally on Daedelus’ Magical Properties) and is a serious record, I been waiting a while for the internet/music world to start taking off its panties and bras and start throwing them in his direction and finally it looks like it’s starting to happen. The response for the record has been overwhelmingly positive and with good reason! It’s got stuff for everyone, Dancers, Downers, Headnodders and kiltered classics. Anyway onto the mix.
We’re all about Crew Love, looks like Goose is too with the 22 min mix consisting almost exclusively of himself and his now infamous //THIS THING// collective mates, we get unreleased tracks from the man himself, Wooshie, Electric Sea Spider and Pink Notes as well as a lovely extended mix of “One Who Can’t Move” the first single to drop from Commitments. Real nice flow to the whole mix.
Bump this shit!!!!
The Jealous Guys – Audiobook (Prod. Zodiac)
This ones been a long time coming…
A while ago Bay Area boys The Jealous Guys dropped their Audiobook EP, boy did the internet like that one! They released the opening track “Genesis“, what seems like forever ago, if you don’t know what the album sounds like yet then just take a look back at that one it’s a pretty good example, well at least as far as it’s got that now trademark Jealous Guys flow and is backed by a beat we could just ogle at for days. If we need to jog your memory a bit more, the whole EP is produced by the big homie Jeremy Rose aka Zodiac who seriously merc’d it! Each track as it’s own feeling it’s own swag which the Jealous guys make their own and really helps produce a pretty complete EP.
It’s been one of our special little gems from last year, if you don’t have it by now, i suggest you head over to The Jealous Guys site and cop it IMMEDIATELY! It’s goin out for free, so seriously do yourself a favour and enjoy yourself.
RAJA (dude can do anything)
The GOK (Guns of Kingston) imprint has been one of my go to crews during this little hiatus we been taking, headed by 19 year old NY native RAJA (Chester Anand, formerly known as InfinitiRock) they have been storming through with banging tape after banging tape these last few months.
Raja is one of those producers that just seem like they can do it all, on his last three tapes Red, Witch and Color, which was billed as a collection of tapes called The October Series there is such a brilliant variety in style that it has you sitting there thinking, surely this can’t all be the same guy. Dude just gets it! From Dilla/Madlib inspired Hip-Hop, Trap Music, Witch-core, Future Beat and all the way to some of the prettiest piano based electronica….. we’re not really down with genre labels BUT what ever the hell you want to call it he’s probably done it and done it with pure class.
Seriously I been listening to The October Series for months straight now and if you haven’t been you need to start now! You can grab the series for free from the GOK website or from the Astro Nautico Bandcamp via their Mediafire links.
